Scott MacDonald is a 22-year-old who might be asked for ID to get into a bar.
But on the golf course, no one questions his credentials.
Monday at Mount Saint Pierre, the Pembroke native who works as an assistant to Paul Sharratt at Rideau View Golf Club fired A 3 over par 75 to win his second Ottawa Valley Professional Golfers assistants’ tournament of the season.
MacDonald scored a two under par victory at Kingsway Park earlier this year and a couple of weeks ago lost in a one-hole playoff to Mont Cascades Bob Gratton in a head pros’ tournament at Smiths fall.
“I’ve been fortunate to get the opportunity play quite a bit,” he said. “Paul Sharratt and the directors of the club have given me a lot of support and time to compete. Not everyone is that fortunate”.
MacDonald, like the rest of the field, found the tight course demanded full concentration and accurate shooting.
Possibly the best move the young pro made was coming to the course a day early for a practice round. What he learned paid off Monday. That and in remembering one of his father Glenn’s favorite sayings drilled into him from the day he started to play nine years ago. My dad always told me to play (to) par. The birdies would take care of themselves. It may sound corny but he’s right. The minute you try to play beyond your (skills) you usually get into trouble.
